So let me get this straight, Kevin Hart is funny? I beg to differ. In my opinion, he's nothing but an unoriginal, loud, foul-mouthed midget... somewhat reminiscent of Katt Williams, except significantly blacker and somewhat better dressed. Where are all the REAL comedians? I'm sorry, but it's going to take more than a profanity laced sketch that features hollow, played out racial jokes to make me laugh. "Yaddy yaddy yadda... because I'm black!" Ummm, no. Where is the creativity? Where is the imagery? Where is the comedy?
I, for one miss stand-up comedy performances from the likes of Jamie Foxx and Dave Chapelle. These comedians commanded our attention by painting vivid pictures with their words. Granted, they were vulgar from time to time, but it would never overshadow the other important aspects of their performance. The same cannot be said for the vast majority of todays popular comedians... but I guess it's out with the old and in with the new, right?
It's somewhat ironic how the art of stand-up comedy parallels the music industry. The sheer quality of stand-up comedians and performances have been on a steep decline, much like music has. However, people support these movements because there isn't much else to cleave to. Talented, original musical artists such as Common and Lupe Fiasco can't seem to sell more records than the likes of Plies or Gucci Mane. Such nonsense would have been inexplicable and damn near improbable 15 years ago. However, it's not the mid 90's anymore, it's 2011... and it would be wise for me to focus on bettering the present as opposed to recalling the glory days of the past.
As I expressed before, I'm not on a mission to turn back the hands of time. As time progresses, things are subject to change. That much is inevitable. All I hope for is the arrival of truly unique talent, as it pertains to stand-up comedy. Jamie Foxx received an incredible amount of exposure from his work, as did Dave Chapelle. Consequently, they decided to move on to pursue bigger and better things. I'm okay with that. True talent cannot be denied for long... but who's going to take their place? Kevin Hart? Katt Williams? For you, perhaps. I'll take a rain check. Notify me when someone funny arrives on the scene.
