Album Review: Kelis "Flesh Tone"

It's been 10 years since Kelis burst onto the scene with her colorful sound and colorful hair to got with it, assisted by The Neptunes Kelis scored a couple hits mostly in Europe. She's most known for her Electro-Hop #1 single and highly parodied "Milkshake". In these years since her last album and she's taken a break, dumped both the neptunes and her label, had a baby and now divorcing her husband.
She returns this summer with the highly anticipated "Flesh Tone" her first full on Electronic dance album on will.i.am's vanity label via interscope records. The album's general tone is very spacey and liberating, featuring futuristic production by Freeschool on 22nd Century and David Guetta on "Scream". But while those songs are about fun her lyrical content goes a little deeper in fact despite them bringing about er son Knight they are borderline religious, like "4th of July (Fireworks)" with lyrics like: "didn't think I needed you" or "you make me over" I've heard a million times in religious recordings. Kelis did state she wrote the album with life in mind and it's a big departure from her angrier last albums. What better way to proclaim your happiness with music that makes people want to dance and be happy. Despite all the negative press she's getting from her divorce Kelis is on cloud 9 with this album. See her single Acapella if you don't believe me, it's full of life and the best way to close a thriving party.
4.5/5
Sounds Like: A never ending party for the young adult finding their way.
