Artist Spotlight: Jeff Spec

"Sneakerboxxx" is the latest offering from Jeff Spec, one of Vancouver's most prolific hip hop artists. The album is experimental in the context of modern hip hop, incorporating mainly live instrumentation alongside soulful vocal arrangements. Jeff's rhymes range from storytelling to social commentary, and from creative wordplay to conversational poetry. The 11 tracks promise to offer something for everyone; guest appearances include Moka Only and Shane Eli, as well as up-and-coming vocalists NaRai, Omar Khan, and Daniel Klenner.

While Jeff has worked with various labels in the past, including New York-based Day By Day Entertainment, "Sneakerboxxx" is released on his own imprint, Pushin' Records. Spec is a staple on the live music scene in Vancouver and abroad, and has developed a fanbase reaching around the globe. His previous albums "Rhythm and Blues" and "...a little night music" charted in the Chart Attack and !earshot top 10 for hip hop, nationwide. He will be touring Canada and the U.S. throughout the year in support of the record, and will release at least 4 videos, starting with "Truck Sh*t" in late June, 2010.
The material included on "Sneakerboxxx" has already proven to appeal to a broader audience than (but definitely not excluding) just the traditional hip hop heads, due in part to heavy contributions from Vancouver's Star Captains, a jazz-soul fusion sextet that boasts a strong stage presence and a healthy following of its own.

BEYSUS CARTER!! : Beyoncé is being sued by a nightmare neighbor

Philip Markowitz alleges in a lawsuit obtained by TMZ ...his peace and quiet was shattered the morning of March 26, 2010, when the film crew "invaded his neighborhood" ... waking him out of a peaceful sleep at 7 AM.

That nightmare was followed by a series of intrusions, Markowitz claims. Markowitz says during the morning ... every time he tried leaving his house the crew was blocking his driveway. He went in and out and in and out .... and each time, he says, there was some obstacle in his way.

Now it gets really good. Markowitz says he "missed several business calls while arguing calmly in his driveway." By 11:30 AM, "He demanded compensation for the trespass on his property and the inconvenience and delay he had already suffered."

In fact, Markowitz says he told someone from the crew that he's gotten upwards of $10,000 for the use of his property, but says he was told he couldn't be paid this time because it was a "low budget film shoot."

But Markowitz doesn't buy it. He's suing Beyonce and the production company for unspecified damages ... including the dreaded punitive damages.

Artist Spotlight: Carvis

Carvis is an R&B singer who cites his influences as James Brown, Michael Jackson and Marvin Gaye. While growing up in Gulfport Mississippi, Carvis quickly became attached to music and began to study the music he enjoyed listening to. It wasn't until high school that he began to pursue his ambition as a musician. He began singing in choir and winning a number of local talent shows. Now only is Carvis a singer, but he is also a basketball player playing at the college level. When Hurrican Katrina almost completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, Carvis made Orlando, Florida his second home. With great vocal talent and a Mississipi swag, the sky is the limit for singer Carvis.

Spice Girls reunion in the works, minus one

The Spice Girls are planning to reform for a second time, according to sources.

Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Mel B and Mel C met together to finalise plans for a new album, a DVD, merchandising and a new tour, reports The Mirror.

However, the comeback may go ahead without Victoria Beckham, who is apparently reluctant to rejoin.

"The girls are so excited. They are buzzing about getting back together and each have so many new ideas and so much to bring to the table," a source said.

"They are desperate to get Posh on board, but that is the sticking point. Although she's still so nostalgic about the good old days, she has moved on now and is relishing the fashion world.

"They don't want to give up on her, but have so many plans. The way things are going they might have to go on without her if she doesn't come round soon."

The band reformed for a world tour in 2007 which was ultimately cut short due to "other commitments".

ALBUM REVIEW: Uffie "Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans"

So if you remember my list from March about my most anticipated albums, 3 of which been reviewed on this site ( B.o.B, Robyn and Kelis). Now we move to the fourth one to arrive in my box, Uffie's debut that's seen more push backs and first singles than the pussycat dolls change members.
The album itself is fun and playful and just all around wholesome in a DIRTY way. The bulk of the material honestly has no true feel of anything worth mentioning nor shit we should give a fuck about, but that's what makes this album worth the listen. Uffie speaks little on subjects about her kid, her husband and generally how cool she is, something what Ke$ha tries to but fails miserably. The sound of the album also ranges from electropop to dance based old school hip-hop to the kicking style of Dubstep. All in all the album makes due for a fun day out with your friends for what I like to call "Beach Music".
Uffie definately gets the party started.

Rated: 3.5

In stores June 8 on Ed Banger Records.

Artist Spotlight: Teddy Jackson's Unawerewolf

Teddy Jackson is an amazing pop/r&b singer with a great voice and range. His mixtape Unawerewolf is a great tape which allows him to showcase his versatility and lyrical prowess while delivering a quality. Don't mistake this for the typical "mixtape" because the compilation and quality of the material on the tape allow it to sound at the same level as an album. The songs are consistently good and have great replay value. On the track "Might Morphin PR" while assisted by Rockie Rayne, the two borrow Chris Brown's "Transformers" beat and morph it into a cybernetic banger with references to popular robots throughout entertainment. With strong punchlines and pop culture references, this song definitely breathes new breath to the popular instrumental. Unawerewolf's stand out song in my opinion is Unawerewolf(Part 2). The song is powered by an instrumental very reminiscent of something the late Michael Jackson would have graced. Teddy's vocals are very powerful on the song and the song is very catchy. The instrumental breaks are ridiculous on this track. The mixtape is excellent and is definitely worth downloading. It has appearances by Omarion, Gucci Mane, Cassie, LP & PG. The album...i mean mixtape, its on point...

M.I.A. "The Government Runs The Internet"

M.I.A. has said that she believes the CIA is behind the development of sites Google and Facebook.

The 34-year-old warned users to be cautious on the internet, as the government is watching at all times.

"All governments are connected to Google, and all governments can shift their search engines so only what they want you to see comes up… I want kids to be aware of this digital circumstance," she told Nylon.

"Everyone on the Internet is like, 'Oh my God, come and join Facebook!' They’re all so optimistic… and really, everyone is f**king you up behind the screens. And I don't like that. It makes it difficult for me to interact with my fans knowing that. Google and Facebook were developed by the CIA, and when you're on there, you have to know that."

M.I.A. recently tweeted the private phone number of a New York Times journalist after the paper published an unfavourable article.

THROWBACK JOINT: Lil' Kim ft. Lil Cease - Crush On You

This joint still gives me chills whenever I hear it!

Major Lazer & LaRoux, LazerProof Mixtape

LaRoux whatever, we want to see a Major Lazer/Mindy Kaling collabo called LAZERPROFESSIONAL. At least that’s what we thought before we heard LazerProof—not too big on LaRoux’s stuff aside from Skream’s “Into the Kill” remix, so even though Major Lazer’s dancehall/dubstep steez on LazerProof is absolutely 100% our steez, it took us a couple days to download it. But when we did, we discovered something great: Our LaRoux roadblock was apparently the unrelenting Nintendo 8-Bit k-hole of her album, cause this chick’s voice is kind of ill! She sounds sort of like an angel floating on a raft of digital dancehall, except when she sounds like a jilted cabaret chick on a juiced-up version of Gucci Mane’s “Lemonade (Rave Juice RMX).” Also: the “Rhythm is a Dancer” version of “Hold Yuh.”

Lil Cease wants Junior Mafia Reunion STAT

Lil' Cease Says Reunion With Lil Kim, Junior M.A.F.I.A. 'Needs To Happen'

One of music's all-time great lyrical masters, Christopher "The Notorious B.I.G." Wallace would have been 38 years old on Friday (May 21) had he lived. Biggie has been gone 13 years, but everyone who loved him still celebrates his memory. Junior M.A.F.I.A. member Lil' Cease told MTV News that he wants to make Biggie look down smiling by setting up a major reconciliation.

"If I could give Big a gift for his 38th birthday, it would be to bring the family together," Cease said.

"Just to see all the people he had around him in one room together: Me, Kim, D-Roc, Gutter, the whole M.A.F.I.A. Those people, it wasn't business with us  it was friends. I didn't write rhymes. I'm sure (Biggie) didn't put me in the group because I had talent. He said, 'I wanna make sure you good for the rest of your life. I'mma build you your own lane. You take it from there.' He did that for me and nine other people in the group.

"He also did that for the people that surrounded us, the friends like (Lance) 'Un' Rivera. A lot of us are here because of what Biggie built. At the end of the day, no matter what (gripes M.A.F.I.A. members may have), if everybody say they love Big like they say they would love him, I know (a reunion) is something he would want. I know something that's (probably) bothering him is that everybody is separated."

The Junior M.A.F.I.A. imploded a little more than five years ago, when Lil' Cease and M.A.F.I.A. member Banger were forced to testify in Lil' Kim's infamous perjury case. In the aftermath, Kim publicly disassociated herself from her onetime close friends. There have been dis records, lawsuits and obviously the Queen Bee's nearly 10-month incarceration.

Still, Cease says he wants to continue to try and come back together.

"We're working on it," the Brooklyn-born Cease continued. "That's something I would definitely want to do. I tried it for a year. Especially for Kim  I reached out for years. Everybody else is kinda in sync: I speak to Roc, Nino, D, (Money) L, everybody else is still kinda connected. The only one I wasn't connected (with) was Kim.

"I been swallowed my pride. Because as a family, when you know somebody for so long, you go through things. I didn't think our situation would go this long and this far. As you get older, you start to appreciate that family value. It's hard to try and do that in this day and age, when you this age. It takes a lot to build that kind of loyalty and trust. As days went by, I thought, 'This is something Big would want.' I hear it every day. I\'m in the neighborhood and I'm outside. When they see Kim, they think of Big. When they see me, they think of Big. When they see D-Roc, they think of Big, and we're all separated. I know Big would want us all eating together in one room. I'mma do my best to make that happen."

Cease-A-Leo insisted that despite his long estrangement from Kim, he still has love for her and is optimistic that they can at least talk to start the healing process.

"We're still talking to the same people," he explained. "I guess people are starting to come around now and they are trying to make it happen. I speak to some of her close friends that I'm still close friends with and we working on it. It's about that time," he added about mending the divide between him and Kim.

"It's something that needs to happen. I don't want no drama, especially with somebody I came up with. These are the things I think about."

Chris Brown: No Bullsh*t

Chris Brown apparently shot a video for one of my favorite songs originally released on his "In My Zone" mixtape... Which by the way was arguably better than his actual album. I present to you, Chris Brown's version of "Invented Sex", lol.

Artist Spotlight: Shinobi Ninja

Shinobi Ninja is a Brooklyn, New York based group that is comprised of 6 members, who each bring their own distinct style, sound and element. I've seen and heard of many bands who have fused differing sounds in an attempt to create something new and fresh. Often times they've failed. This most certainly is not the case with Shinobi Ninja. Upon listening to their material, I discovered that their contrasting styles blend extremely well together. What I love most about this group is that they do not confine themselves to a single genre of music, as evidenced by some of their musical influences (Nirvana, Janet Jackson, Faith No More, Meteallica, Beastie Boys, etc.). What's even more impressive is the fact that they produce their own material... Which is more than most artists/groups can claim today. Their mixtape as well as their EP, "Brooklyn to Babylon" are definitely worth a listen.

Lil' Romeo's underwhelming USC career comes to an end

In a decision sure to disappoint opposing hecklers far more than USC basketball fans, Percy Miller is packing up his trademark aviator shades and oversized jewelry and leaving the Trojans program.
Miller, best known as rapper Lil' Romeo, will not return for his junior season, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. The 5-foot-11 point guard logged a mere 19 minutes in two years at USC, appearing in just three games last season in part due to a sprained left shoulder.
That Miller was even recruited to USC at all is one of the more bizarre decisions of former coach Tim Floyd's scandal-tainted tenure at the school.

Most believe Miller received a scholarship offer to USC only because his relationship with childhood friend DeMar Derozan helped the Trojans land the future NBA lottery pick. Floyd has always refuted this, but why else would he have recruited an injury-prone 160-pound guard who averaged 8.6 points a game as a senior for Beverly Hills High School.
"It's very rare to give a scholarship to someone who may never play," All-Star Sports recruiting director Bob Gibbons told the Wall Street Journal at the time.
If you want to add a little humor to your Friday workday, take a look at how Floyd described Percy Miller in a press release when the rapper turned point guard signed with the Trojans 2 1/2 years ago.
"He is a very unselfish point guard who plays exceptionally hard," Floyd said. "You can't have enough guys on your team who you think are reliable and dependable and have a tremendous upside. He is going to be playing on one of the better high schools in the area and it is always been important to us to have point guards coming in that know how to win."
That "tremendous upside," as Floyd so amusingly put it, not surprisingly didn't translate into tremendous production on the court.
Let's wish Miller further success, whether at another college or in the entertainment industry. And let's hope USC can find a way to put his scholarship to better use in the future.

KRS-One Explains Boycott of National Hip Hop Museum

The National Museum of Hip Hop is facing a feud with pioneers of the culture. While the organizers want to honor the history of Hip Hop, some pioneers are saying that the museum is "illegitimate," according to the Wall Street Journal.
Many of Hip Hop's pioneers have been involved with the museum as advisers, but they also want to get paid for their personal accounts and more. While the museum has not been opened yet, it seems it will not get support from some pioneers due to these differences.
In April, a gala was held at Manhattan's Pink Elephant club. Some of the culture's trailblazers claimed they were not invited while Craig Wilson, a Bronx native who is leading the museum's efforts, said that they were invited but that they asked for celebrity treatment and last minute meetings. In the end, many boycotted the Pink Elephant event, an act that has put a strain on the relationship between pioneers and the museum.
KRS-One shed some light on this.
"They deserve to get paid. This wouldn't be a gift. More like an honorarium for scholars...This dude (Wilson) is arguing with the gods!"
Wilson says that it shouldn't be about money.
"We're doing this for the culture. Period. Not for one specific group, or the pioneers. It's up to them whether they want to be down with it or not."
Late in April, about 40 rappers and veterans met at S.O.B.'s in New York. Now, they have formed The Universal Federation for Preservation of Hip Hop Culture to generate funds for pioneers. The Federation also plans on licensing collective memorabilia more to museums to make money.
